Super Bowl Bound?

by Jonathan Storti

For decades the Saints were the ‘Aints, a rag tag group of players rarely contending for the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. Their fans were more accustomed to wearing paper bags over their heads, than watching top-level football. Yet in the past few years the New Orleans Saints have become worthy of applause, especially since they added Drew Brees in free agency. In the previous two seasons, Brees has been outstanding throwing the ball down the field. Last season he finished with 5,069 passing yards, just short of Dan Marino’s single season record. This year he has continued his aerial dominance, but something around him has changed. His team caught up to Drew’s standard of play. The Saints have added a strong running game and capable defense around him. Now that the Saints are no longer a one trick pony, their aspirations have soared. With the emergence of running backs Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell opponents must not only game plan against the pass, but the run as well. These weapons, along with former USC star Reggie Bush and ex-NY Giant Jeremy Shockey have created the highest scoring team in the league. Amazingly their offense is only half the story, Super Bowl contenders need to have a defense.

Under new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, the Saints have dramatically improved. Another key acquisition in the off-season was the signing of defensive back Darren Sharper. Through the first seven weeks of the season Sharper has six interceptions, taking three of them back for touchdowns. New Orleans improved defense has relieved huge pressure from the offense. Drew Brees no longer needs to throw five touchdowns every game for the Saints to win. Much success can be given to Williams’ aggressive, blitz-oriented defense, which has contributed towards the Saints leading the league in defensive touchdowns. The importance of a solid defense is huge for a team with Super Bowl hopes; ask any coach, and he’ll answer, “Defense wins championships.” The last team to win a Super Bowl without a great defense was the 2000 St. Louis Rams, and even their defense was solid. With the victory over the Atlanta Falcons Monday night, the Saints have improved to 7-0. They along with the Indianapolis Colts remain the only undefeated teams. The New Orleans Saints have looked like the most balanced team in the NFL, and make no mistake, these aint the ‘Aints.
